Elizabeth Harris
My work examines personal and cultural memory.
I'm exploring how culture and thought change and are changing. I combine and mask image and shape to reveal how the mind and eye take in the world around us. Finding that what is left out is perhaps more important than what remains.
The wall sculpture is inspired by the post-war art movement in which traditional themes and materials were abandoned, and surfaces were literally attacked. In my process I burn, tear, nail, and drill into my surfaces, continually building up and tearing down, and finding beauty in this expression of time passing. Each step is an intuitive reaction to the last.
